LETTER FROM THE MAYOR

Dear Orland Park Residents,

In addition, we have many free concerts and movies this summer at Crescent Park. Visit orlandpark.org/events for a complete list of upcoming special events. The Village’s annual Fourth of July celebration kicks-off with the annual Veterans Liberty Run & Walk on July 1 and concludes with a concert featuring 4Cast and a musical fireworks display at Centennial Park on July 4.The Taste of Orland Park will be held the weekend of August 5 through August 7 at Village Center. The Village has received many accolades over the years. Most recently, we were honored with the Website of the Year Award for our new and improved website, orlandpark.org Last, but certainly not least, we are excited to announce that we have been named one of Chicago Magazine’s Best Places to Live in the June/July 2022 issue of the publication. This is a wonderful honor for Orland Park. The Village’s natural open spaces, our proximity to downtown Chicago, great schools and a thriving real estate market were all important parts of Orland Park being named. I’m looking forward to seeing everyone around town this summer!

It’s summertime in Orland Park and it is great to see everyone out and about enjoying all Orland Park has to offer. It is truly one of my favorite times of the year when Orland Park’s parks and facilities are full of families and fun events are in full swing. Within the pages of this issue of the Village of Orland Park Newsletter you will find information about upcoming events, programs and projects in Orland Park. We hope that you find it useful and informative. Thank you to those who joined us on Memorial Day as we remembered and honored those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedoms. The Orland Park community faithfully comes out in support of our area veterans and I am humbled every time I am able to attend an event. The perfect place to escape the summer heat, the Centennial Park Aquatic Center is open for the season. Market at the Park is back on Thursday nights from 4-8 p.m. for 10 full weeks of markets at Crescent Park. I am excited for the remaining Centennial Park West Concert Series as we welcome bands Elton Live! The Elton John Experience, Pearl Jam Tribute Chicago, and Without U2 Tribute on August 20 and for the final show of the series, we will bring 90s rock to the Village with Hinder, Spin Doctors, and Dishwalla on September 3.

CHICAGO MAGAZINE NAMED ORLAND PARK One Of The “BEST PLACES TO LIVE”

Orland Park has joined an elite list, having been named one of Chicago Magazine’s best places to live. The magazine used statistics from Midwest Real Estate Data, the U.S. Census Bureau, the Illinois State Board of Education and the police departments for Chicago and every town in Cook, DuPage, Kane, Lane, McHenry and Will Counties. “This is a wonderful honor for Orland Park,” said Mayor Keith Pekau. “The Village’s natural open spaces, our proximity to downtown Chicago, great schools and a thriving real estate market were all important parts of Orland Park being named,” the mayor said. “It’s especially gratifying when a well-respected source like Chicago Magazine makes an unsolicited finding that recognizes our community’s value,” the mayor added. “With over 650 acres of parkland, this village lives up to its name,” author Carissa Crawford Chappell wrote in the magazine feature, noting not only the Village’s own parks and trails but the ease of access to the Cook

County Forest Preserve system from both the north and south ends of town. “We are very proud of being named in the publication for the Village’s livability, home values, schools, well-maintained streets and most of all, public safety,” said Pekau. “While those of us living here have known this all along, it is nice to be recognized for these qualities.” The author studied how home prices have fared in recent years compared with prices in neighboring areas as well as whether buyers can get good value for their money. Orland Park’s median home sale price for 2021 was $399,900, with a five year change of 32%. The number of home sales in Orland Park for 2021 was listed at 642 single- family homes. In describing the many options of home purchases in the area, Crawford Chappell noted “You can find cheaper suburbs nearby, but not with the great schools and other amenities Orland Park

offers…which is why this town of nearly 60,000 appeals to young families and empty nesters alike.” “They studied everything that makes Orland Park great --- a variety of housing options, our low crime rate, great schools, outstanding parks, transportation, a superior shopping experience for all,” explained Pekau.” “What keeps value are good schools, well-maintained streets and safety,“ said Ray Morandi of Morandi Properties. “And that’s not going to change in Orland Park, as people are going to continue to look for that.” View online at: https://www.chicagomag.com/chicago- magazine/june-july-2022/where-to-buy- now/suburbs/

Southwest Highway (Illinois 7) from 131st Street to 135th Street - IDOT Project

104th Avenue Multi-Use Path from 159th Street to 163rd Place - IDOT/Village Project

2022 CONSTRUCTION This IDOT project involves constructing new drainage crossings and a stormwater overflow area to help minimize area flooding. Motorists can expect shoulder closures with occasional lane closures. Access to residences and businesses within the work zone will be maintained throughout construction, which is anticipated to be completed by the end of 2022. Through IDOT, the Village of Orland Park will have a new multi-use path constructed to connect the existing paths at 159th Street and 163rd Place. This will eliminate a gap in the Village’s multi-use path system along the east side of 104th Avenue. Construction is anticipated to begin this summer and completed in late fall. Traffic along104th Avenue will be shifted one lane to the west to accommodate the work zone needed for construction.

Cal Sag Bridge at 104th Avenue - IDOT Project

The Illinois Department of Transportation has closed 104th Avenue for a bridge strengthening project. Construction is expected to last two years. Please note that the administration of projects, construction timelines and lane closures are out of the Village’s jurisdiction and control. However, the Village will continue to work with the agencies to assist in any way possible for a smooth transition.

This IDOT project will replace the existing bridge decks, make pier and abutment repairs and install new lighting for bridge. Traffic will be reduced from three to two lanes in each direction to make temporary pavement so southbound LaGrange Road can accommodate traffic in both directions. The project is anticipated to be completed in the fall of 2023.

WEBSITE OF THE YEAR

OF THE YEAR WEBSITE 2022 Granicus Digital Government Award

Granicus’ annual Digital Government Awards honor transformational achievements improving civic engagement, service delivery and government efficiency and effectiveness.

Granicus proudly states: The Village of Orland Park implemented the rule of three when developing their new website. Information should be no more than three clicks from the homepage, what once required an in-person visit should now take under three minutes to do online, and the most popular information should be findable in three different ways. Today, the Village’s website is exactly what the team set out to achieve: A visually appealing, user-friendly and streamlined site that is a natural extension of Village services and style.

Headed by the Village’s Communications and Marketing Division, the new website was designed and developed with the end user in mind, utilizing features and a layout that was easy to use, welcoming and data driven.

After a crime occurs, often times the first step in the police investigation is canvassing the area for security cameras, that may have captured evidence of the crime. While it would still be necessary for the police to canvass an area during an investigation, a compiled database of security camera information would help

PUBLIC SAFETY

RUSE Burglary

Ruse burglaries are crimes that occur on a regular basis throughout the United States. A ruse burglary is an incident in which a suspect approaches a residence and often pretends to be an official from a municipal department. Many times the suspect claims to be from the building or water department and needs to check inside the residence. Sometimes the suspect will ask the resident to exit the residence in order to distract them outside.

While one offender keeps the homeowner occupied, one or more additional offenders enter the home undetected and commit a burglary. Seniors are specifically targeted in this type of crime and many times crimes such as these go unreported. Offenders will target their victims by driving through neighborhoods looking for seniors doing yard work or by following them home from grocery stores or pharmacies. The Orland Park Police Department urges residents to be observant of their surroundings and report suspicious persons or activities when they are occurring. Utility workers from companies which provide services to your home generally only come to your home at your request, so if someone shows up at your door, verify who they are. Additionally, avoid home repair scams by never allowing someone to perform driveway sealing or other repairs on the spot. Residents are advised not to let transient workers perform repair work without providing a business card, allowing you to check on the reputation of the business. If ever in doubt, or if the

TORNADO SEASON

TORNADOSEASON IS BACK

Upon the issuance of a TORNADO WARNING or during a severe weather incident, the Emergency Warning Siren System should be activated in the event of one of the following: A CONFIRMED sighting of a tornado, or funnel cloud aloft by a trained weather spotter within five (5) miles of the village. This five-mile perimeter should be extended geographically around the perimeter of the village from the farthest northern, southern, eastern and western boarders at a minimum. Towns within this five-mile perimeter include Oak Lawn, Hickory Hills, Chicago Ridge, Worth, Palos Hills, Palos Park, Palos Heights, Alsip, Midlothian, Oak Forest, Markham, Crestwood, Country Club Hills, Matteson, Tinley Park, Frankfort, Mokena, New Lenox, Lockport, Lemont and portions of unincorporated Will County and Cook County. A CONFIRMED sighting by a trained weather spotter of severe winds causing structural damage within five (5) miles of the village. A CONFIRMATION of severe winds in excess of 70 miles per hour within the village. The receipt of a tornado warning, issued by the National Weather Service, indicating that Orland Park is in the direct path of the oncoming tornado.

The Orland Park Police Department currently has fourteen outdoor weather warning sirens placed

throughout the village. As a reminder, outdoor weather sirens are to alert people who are outside for impending severe weather and not for those already indoors. Those individuals, who may not hear the audible warning while inside, should monitor radio, television and/or weather apps for the most up to date information on the path of any severe weather. As an important reminder, the Orland Park Police Department does not sound an “all-clear” by activating the outdoor weather warning sirens after the passing of a severe storm. This policy is in effect because a situation may arise where a storm has cleared and another one, following on the heels of the first, meets the conditions for re-activation.

MOSQUITO ABATEMENT

ABATEMENT MOSQUITO

WHEN IS MOSQUITO SEASON? Mosquito season starts during the summer months and continues through fall. WHO’S IN CHARGE? The Village relies on the South Cook County Mosquito Abatement District (SCCMAD) for administration of the Mosquito Abatement Program. SCCMAD’s mission is to safeguard the health and comfort of the citizens of South Cook County through a planned program to monitor and reduce mosquitoes and other biting insects that transmit diseases or parasites from one human or animal to another, known as vectors.

PREVENTION The most effective way to prevent mosquito borne virus infections from mosquito bites is to prevent them in the first place. Mosquitoes bite during the day and the night, use an insect repellent, wear long-sleeved shirts and pants, treat clothing and gear, and take steps to control mosquitoes indoors and outdoors. You are first in line to be bitten by mosquitoes that breed in your own yard and garden! Mosquitoes can breed even in the tiniest amounts of water. Remove stagnant water so mosquitoes can’t breed. GOT QUESTIONS? Please contact the South Cook County Mosquito Abatement District office at (708) 333-4120 or visit them online at the Cook County Mosquito Abatement website: https://www.sccmad.org

There are over 180 Village- maintained ponds within the Village of Orland Park. The Village’s Public Works Department is responsible for aesthetics and shoreline stabilization of all ponds. The Village Board has requested that a natural approach be taken to sustain and/ or restore pond shorelines. This approach includes the planting of native, deep rooting plants to enhance shoreline stability while also enhancing the aesthetics of the pond itself. The plant life helps to filter any chemical run off that may occur from surrounding properties. The Village works with ecological contractors to help evaluate and maintain many pond sites through
