A VISIT WITH MRS. POTTS Mary Florence Potts’ sad iron was very popular amongst 19th-century women. Irons of the day were solid metal, including the handle. This resulted in the iron becoming hot, causing blisters and burns if a thick cloth was ot used to gripp the handle. Mrs. Potts invented a hollow, metal-bodied iron that had a removable wood handle, making it ready-to-use when hot. She also made both ends of the iron pointed, so the user could iron in both directions. Join presenter Ellie as she entertains guests by portraying Mrs. Potts in 1893 when she showed her invention at the Columbian Exposition. Hot tea and biscuits will be served for all to enjoy.
