2026 Budget In Brief

DEPARTMENT OVERVIEWS

Streets Division The Streets Division of the Public Works Department is responsible for the maintenance of roads, streetlights, parking lots and lights, ballfield lights, street signals, sidewalks, bridges, bike paths, signage, banners/holiday lights and snow removal operations. In addition, the Village coordinates with county and state roads within the Village limits. Neighborhood Road Improvement Program A street maintenance program is approved annually by the Mayor and Board of Trustees wherein various Village-owned streets are scheduled for rehabilitation. The purpose of this program is to reconstruct streets that have shown signs of deterioration over and above the normal maintenance. Due to the consistent commitment to spending funds on road improvements, the goal to reduce the percentage of poor and very poor condition roads is being met. The program includes replacement of hazardous sidewalks, repair or replacement of non functioning curbs and gutters, milling of existing streets, new surface layers of asphalts and construction of ADA compliant sidewalk ramps and crosswalks. Miscellaneous roadway preservation including pavement crack sealing, rejuvenator and patching extend the life of roads beyond 20 years. With mill and overlays in the future, the Village’s goal is to get to 50-70 years for roads. Areas completed in 2025 include Catalina West, Brook Hills II, Kingswood Drive, Green Valley Drive, Oak Meadows, Sedgewick, Streamstown and Meadow view Court, Wedgewood Commons, 1st, 2nd and 3rd Avenue, 144th Street, and San Luis. Road improvements for 2026 are budgeted at $6 million and will include the latest road scan recommendations to determine the road repair locations.

In 2026, areas to be paved include Catalina West, Wheeler Drive from 80th Avenue to Catalina Court, Brook Hills Phase III and Mallard Landings. Centennial Park Complex Baseball/Softball Field Lights In 2022, the Village started converting the existing ballfield lights at Centennial Park to state-of-the-art LED Musco lights. Musco provides a 25-year warranty and remote-control access while meeting athletic field standards for safe play. Centennial Park Ballfield #3 will be converted in 2026, with the Village receiving a ComEd rebate for the upgrades. Parking Lot and Paths The Village is continuing to maintain and improve the Village owned parking lots and existing path systems. The Streets Division is planning to finish the CPAC parking lot and resurface the Sportsplex parking lot in 2026, plus select path improvements. Future parking lot improvements include the John Humphrey ballfield lot and the Schussler Park west lot in 2027. Both parking lots and paths will be evaluated in 2026 for future planned improvements.
