LETTER FROM THE MAYOR

Additionally, I would like to thank our entire Police Department for all that they do to keep us safe. The last 6 years have the lowest index crimes in the 31-year that we have been tracking index crimes. It led to us having #2 lowest property crime rate and #5 lowest violent crime rate out of the 360 largest suburbs in the United States and the lowest violent crime rate for towns over 50,000 people in the State of Illinois. We also have the safest mall in the Chicagoland area thanks to the OPPD’s fine work. I want to extend my thanks to everyone who attended the mayor’s events in 2024. These events are great ways to learn all about the happenings in the Village, as well as great opportunities to ask me questions in person. Be on the lookout on the Village website and social media for information on the next event. I look forward to seeing familiar faces and those of you who may be attending for the first time in 2025. Please visit page 8 for important winter safety information. Winter is often a treacherous time for seniors and their families. This important information covers fire safety and everything you may face during the winter months. Please take every precaution you can to prevent falling! The

Village of Orland Park has many other tips and information available on the Village’s website at orlandpark.org/ coldsafety. Just because it’s cold outside doesn’t mean you can’t remain active. If you are looking for a great way to incorporate a bit of exercise into your routine, take a look at some of the great adult and senior programs offered by the Orland Park Health and Fitness Center and Sportsplex highlighted in this newsletter on pages 20-27. for all you do to make Orland Park the wonderful community it is today. The senior population in Orland Park continues to be an integral part of the fiber of our community. I am amazed by your influence, strength and the example each of you set for the rest of the community. As we head into 2025, I want to thank each and every one of you As always, if you have questions and/or suggestions, please reach out to any of the Village’s departments directly or visit us online at orlandpark.org. Dear Orland Park Seniors,

Michael R. Milani

We’ve had an exciting winter season here in Orland Park already! From weather highs and lows to the fantastic Christmas events, it was great seeing everyone out and about and taking it all in. 2024 was a year full of exciting changes at the Village, including the new permanent stage at Centennial Park West. With tens of thousands of visitors attending our CPW concerts, Market at the Park and of course, the Taste of Orland Park, Centennial Park West will be the focal point of entertainment in our region for years to come. Schussler Park has blossomed into a sports hub for all to enjoy. The park has received nothing but high praise from the community. With the All Inclusive Playground installation scheduled for 2025, Schussler Park will be a place for everyone in Orland Park.

LETTER FROM THE CHIEF OF POLICE

Dear Orland Park Seniors,

This fall, the Orland Park Police Department held its annual Senior Luncheon at the Orland Park Civic Center. The event covered a wide array of topics pertinent to Orland Park Seniors. Our Second Annual Southwest Suburban Safety meeting was held at Village Hall. This informational event allowed local agencies to provide updates on safety in the region and residents to ask questions. It’s important to the department to host events like these in the community. Keeping Orland Park informed helps keep us all safer. You can view a recording of both events on the Village’s YouTube channel. I want to personally thank the families and friends who took the time to attend our community outreach events in 2024. As we continue our outreach programs in 2025, we invite you to stay active and participate. Our department events are not only excellent ways

to stay in touch with safety in Orland Park, but also foster and grow relationships with our officers. Please take the time to follow the Orland Park Police Department on Facebook, X or Instagram to stay up-to-date on important safety information, programs and events. Thank you for your support of the men and women of the Orland Park Police Department as we continue to do our absolute best to provide optimum safety and security services to the Orland Park community.

Incident reporting system for all non-emergency communications

The safety of residents and guests in Orland Park is the first and foremost priority for the Orland Park Police Department. We are proud of the fact that the Village of Orland Park has seen Index Crimes continue to drop below our 25-year average and crime in Orland Park has continued to decrease. With that being said, we must remain actively aware of those who seek to commit crimes in the Orland Park area. We ask that you, as residents of the community, do your part to let us know if you see anything that may seem odd or gives you concern. As always, we ask that if you SEE SOMETHING, SAY SOMETHING and give us a call at (708) 349-4111 for non emergencies or 9-1-1 in the event of an emergency.

OP311: VILLAGE SERVICES

Improves responsiveness to citizen requests

OP311 is a non-emergency system used to report Village concerns such as potholes, noise violations and broken streetlights. Residents often don’t know which department to call, however, OP311 helps eliminate that confusion. Simply submit a request on orlandpark.org through the OP311 Portal. You may enter code enforcement related requests anonymously. All other requests require registration. Registering allows a resident to view all of their submitted requests and receive updates about their requests via email. To register, open the OP311 Portal and click on the login button. Within the Login screen, click on the Register button and fill out the requested information.

WINTER SAFETY

WINTER FIRE SAFETY TIPS

The below tips help teach what to do before, during and after a storm to help keep you and your family safe from a winter fire.

Test all smoke alarms. Do this at least once per month. This way you will know they are working. Install carbon monoxide alarms in your home. Plan two ways out of the home in case of an emergency. Clear your driveway and front walk of ice and snow. This will provide easy access to your home. Make sure your house number can be seen from the street. If you need help, this ensures firefighters will be able to find you. Be ready in case the power goes out. Have flashlights on hand. Also, have battery-powered lighting and fresh batteries. Never use candles. Stay aware of winter weather. Listen to the television or radio for updates. Watch for bulletins online. Check on neighbors. Check on others who may need help. Generators should be used outdoors. Keep them away from windows and doors. Do not run a generator inside your garage, even if the door is open. Stay away from downed wires. Report any downed wires to authorities. Be ready if the heat stops working. Use extra layers of clothes and blankets to stay warm. If you use an emergency heat source, keep anything that can burn at least 3 feet away. Turn portable heaters off when you leave the room. Turn them off when you go to bed.

These safety tips are provided by the National Fire Protection Association and the Orland Fire Protection District.

PATHLIGHTS

Aging alone is an increasingly common experience for older adults, the prevalence is influenced by factors including longer life expectancies and societal shifts that impact family dynamics and support structures. While some enjoy the peace that solitude can bring, for many, reality includes bouts of loneliness that can have serious physical and emotional consequences. To support older adults who are aging alone, understanding the impacts of loneliness and developing strategies to counteract them is essential. Loneliness can increase the risk of dementia by 50% and increase the risk of hospitalization by 68%. Common warning signs can include weight loss or poor dietary decisions, lack of interest in socializing, skipping or forgetting medication or hoarding, clutter and disrepair in the home. The key to combating loneliness is intentional connection and community-building. Whether through social groups, technology, pets or volunteer work, there are paths to make aging independently an enriching chapter of life. Proactive engagement, coupled with awareness and supportive resources, can transform the experience of aging alone from one of isolation to one of resilience and connection AGING ALONE: COMBATING LONELINESS AND EMBRACING CONNECTION

RESIDENT FEATURE

Connie Gurgone: A Life Well-Lived and Celebrated in Orland Park In the Village of Orland Park, the longevity of its residents is not just a personal blessing, it’s a gift to the entire community. The Village is celebrating the life of Connie Gurgone, having a chance to interview the remarkable woman whose longevity and vibrant spirit has enriched the community. Born on October 11, 1917, in Chicago, Connie grew up in the Chinatown neighborhood above her family’s market. After graduating eighth grade, she worked in the store until her marriage at 28. She and her husband, Sam, shared 46 years of marriage, raising five children and creating plenty of memories. Her favorites being weekends dancing at local ballrooms with Sam, friends and attending church every day. Connie moved to Orland Park in 1996, where she continues to live independently in her condo. “I love Orland Park! It really is a beautiful suburb,” said Connie. “I wish my family would move here so we could be together all the time.” She remains active, filling her days with dancing, singing, cooking, decorating, praying and staying involved in her community. Her chores and activities motivate her to enjoy every day, saying,

“Life is what you make it. I like life! I enjoy it! I enjoy my family, I enjoy everything.” Connie has traveled extensively, enjoying cruises, trips around the U.S. and even a visit to Europe. One of her favorite adventures was a trip to Las Vegas, where she doubled down on her luck and won a jackpot. “My friend says, ‘Connie, is that your machine?’ And I go, goodness, that’s my machine!” Her family describes her as fun-loving, independent and passionate about food and entertaining, and most believe she will outlive them all.

107th Birthday Balloons

Grateful for her long life, Connie believes “How do you live longer?” is a silly question. “I got so tired of hearing that question, and I tell them, ‘How old am I? Well, I’m old enough to vote!’”

Thankfully, she indulged anyways.

“I’ll tell you what the trick is to a long life,” said Connie,

Have a happy attitude.

If you get angry, don’t let it last.

Pray every day.

Refuse to live a boring life!

At the October 7 Village Board meeting, Mayor Keith Pekau declared October 11, 2024, Connie Gurgone Day. It’s a day meant to celebrate not just her 107 years, but the energy, humor and joy she shares with all who know her.
