LETTER FROM THE MAYOR

We have made great strides in recent months as a Village. Orland Park was named one of Chicago Magazine’s Best Places to Live in the June/July 2022 edition of the publication, citing the area’s livability and thriving real estate market and property values. We were once again awarded the Popular Annual Financial Reporting Award from the Government Finance Officers Association this year, a wonderful accomplishment by the finance department. The Village’s Centennial Park Aquatic Center received a “5- Star” Aquatic Safety Award in recognition of the Centennial Park Aquatic Center’s (CPAC) efforts as above the industry standard, reflecting a proactive approach to aquatic risk prevention. Our new website, which was unveiled in August of 2021, was recently named Website of the Year by Granicus for its user-friendly design and three-click feature. All of these accomplishments recognitions in the short time since the last senior magazine was delivered. We can be very proud of the work the Village is doing to maintain the standards we have come to expect from Orland

Park. Congratulations to the community!

Within the pages of this edition of the Village of Orland Park Senior Newsletter, I hope you find information that is useful and informative. Included are tips to help you stay safe from the Orland Park Police Department, balance and agility exercises from local health experts and even a sweet summer strawberry recipe approved by a nutritionist. I hope to see you at one of the upcoming events that you will find in the calendar on page _ and throughout the publication. The Centennial Park West Concert Series has two more great shows, so come on out for a fun time with your friends and families.

Dear Orland Park Seniors,

Summertime in Orland Park is one of my favorite times of the year. Thank you to each of you for being active and present at many of the Village events and programs. The senior population in Orland Park continues to be an integral part of the fiber of our community. I am amazed by your influence, strength and the example each of you set for the rest of the community. Thank you to everyone who came out to help assemble the care packages for the troops at Apple Chevrolet. And if you didn’t make it to this event, we have many opportunities to help on our website at orlandpark. org/veterans or for all volunteer opportunities, orlandpark.org/ volunteer.

Have a wonderful and safe rest of your summer season!

LETTER FROM THE CHIEF OF POLICE

I firmly believe that the safety of residents and guests in Orland Park is the first and foremost priority for the Orland Park Police Department. We are proud of the fact that the Village of Orland Park currently has the lowest number of Index Crimes since 1994 and crime in Orland Park has continued to decrease. The Village of Orland Park has the lowest violent crime rate for municipalities over 50,000 residents in the entire state of Illinois. With that being said, we must remain actively aware of those who make a habit of targeting our senior population. As the weather gets nicer, we sometimes see a rise in door to door activity, including a rise in scams and ruse burglaries. Within the pages of this publication, you will find information regarding ruse burglaries as well as tips on how you can protect yourself from being victimized. Ruse burglaries are crimes in which the offender uses a “ruse” to distract their victim in order to commit a burglary. Remember to not allow anyone in your home unless you know them personally or it is an appointment that you scheduled yourself.

Please take a moment to review the pages of this edition of the senior newsletter to arm yourself with information so that you know what to do in this situation should it present itself. I wanted to personally thank those of you who took the time to attend our community outreach events. It was great to see many of you at the Coffee with a Cop events recently at White Sheep and the Cookout with Cops at neighborhood parks. We ask that you, as residents and pillars of the community, do your part to let us know if you see anything that may seem odd or give you concern. As always, we ask that if you SEE SOMETHING, SAY SOMETHING and give us a call at (708) 349-4111 for non- emergencies or 9-1-1 in the event of an emergency. Thank you for your support of the men and women of the Orland Park Police Department as we do our absolute best to continue to provide safety and security services to the community.

Dear Orland Park Seniors,

For those of you I haven’t had the pleasure of meeting yet, allow me to introduce myself. I had the honor of being sworn in as your new Chief of Police at the May 2, 2022 meeting of the Village Board. I have been a member of the Orland Park Police Department for more than 18 years and have served as a patrol officer, bicycle patrol officer, field training officer, investigator, patrol sergeant, lieutenant in administration, Investigations Commander and Deputy Chief before my recent appointment as the Village’s new Chief of Police. I also served on the South Suburban Major Crimes Task Force as an investigator and assistant commander.

BURGLARY SAFETY & 9 P.M. ROUTINE

Ruse Burglary Safety

9PM Routine The Village of Orland Park Police Department has joined law enforcement agencies nationwide in reminding residents via social media to “lock it or lose it” to prevent property crimes and burglaries. Dubbed The 9 p.m. Routine , the campaign promotes safe practices to prevent and reduce the number of easily preventable burglaries. Residents are encouraged to set a nightly alarm on their phones, watches or other devices to remind them to: Ruse ploys often begin with the offenders creating an excuse to enter the victim’s home after selecting a home by profiling it. The offenders will typically attempt to gain entry to the home by pretending to be a home repair worker. While one offender keeps the homeowner occupied, one or more additional offenders enter the home undetected and commit a burglary. Ruse burglaries continue to be a concern in the region. This type of crime is often committed by career criminals who specialize in ruse entries and home repair fraud. Seniors are specifically targeted in this type of crime and many times crimes such as these go unreported. These offenders target their victims. They drive through neighborhoods on the lookout for seniors doing yard work or will follow them home from grocery stores or pharmacies.

IMPORTANT SAFETY PRECAUTIONS

If approached by someone pretending to be a worker - do NOT let them in your house.

Be observant of surroundings

If ever in doubt, or if the person persists, call 9-1-1 immediately.

and report suspicious activity.

1

Remove valuables (electronic devices, wallets, etc.) from your vehicle.

2

Ensure that vehicle doors and trunks are locked.

3

Check that all home doors and windows are locked.

4

Turn on exterior lights.

Orland Park Neighborhood Watch Program

Can I register multiple cameras?

Yes. While completing the registration form, list the number of external surveillance cameras available. If you are registering cameras for multiple homes or business locations, please complete separate forms for each location. Only videos you provide the Orland Park Police Department with will be viewed. This program does not have access to live video cameras, nor will video footage be obtained without your consent. Visit orlandpark.org/ watch to register. Once registered, you will receive a window cling to hang on a front window/door to show that you are part of the Neighborhood Watch Program. Registration to this program is completely voluntary and can be withdrawn at any time. How do I register? What footage will be used?

valuable time and resources.

The Orland Park Police Department has a resource for Orland Park citizens and business owners to assist in crime prevention and crime solving efforts. The Orland Park Police Department asks residents and businesses to voluntarily register their personal security camera information with the Orland Park Police Department. After a crime occurs, often times the first step in the police investigation is canvassing the area for security cameras, that may have captured evidence of the crime. While it would still be necessary for the police to canvass an area during an investigation, a compiled database of security camera information would help streamline the process and save

The registration would consist of providing the resident or business location, the number of cameras present and contact information for footage viewing. After registering your cameras, the Police Department will not have access to your footage. That would have to be provided by the owner on a case by case basis and only select members of the Police Department would have access to your contact information. The registration process is simple, fast and secure. To register, please fill out the following form that can be found at orlandpark.org/ watch.

Fitness Tips: Improve Your Balance

As people spend more time outside during the summer months, many older adults can reduce the risk of falling by avoiding uneven ground and by faithfully completing a brief series of exercises to improve their balance. Young people take balance for granted, but by the time someone applies for Medicare the person’s body systems that manage balance become less effective, making seniors more prone to falls. “Strength, flexibility and range of motion all work together to maintain balance,” explains Suzanne Billund, a physical therapist at Smith Crossing. In fall of 2020, Smith Crossing, a life plan community in Orland Park, opened Greenleaf Rehab, a $24 million wing exclusively dedicated to providing therapy for short-term stays for adults recovering from complex healthcare needs after surgery or a medical incident. According to Billund, about 75 percent of Smith Crossing residents, not in rehab, are working to achieve balance goals. Exercises, especially when completed with the help of a therapist, can improve balance

and reduce the risk of falling. “As we age, we lose strength,” Billund explains. “Sometimes arthritis, cardiac issues or other chronic illness can deplete strength. Struggling to sustain balance can lead to ambulation limitations or falls. Other times, we help residents rebuild their balance and stamina after a fall or surgery.” “Ideally, a professional physical or occupational therapist will help you determine a safe place

to start,” Billund recommends. “If you want to start balance exercises at home, it is essential that you always are fully supported in a sturdy chair or standing near a kitchen counter or railing that provides reliable support.” Florence Glecier, an independent living resident at Smith Crossing teams up with Billund to demonstrate safe and easy ways to exercise at home.

Build Strength as You Sit

Hip flexion exercises to build strength and flexibility.

1 Sit up straight

Sit up straight with your knees bent at 90 degrees and your feet flat on the ground.

2 Seated marching

Lift your feet five to 10 times like you are marching in place.

As you get stronger you can try to increase the repetitions or raise your feet higher off the floor.

1 Put both hands on the countertop Improve Functional Balance with Standing Exercises If you are confident standing, you can improve balance by carefully exercising in your kitchen. 2 March in place, bringing your knees up as high as you can.

You also can improve flexibility in your hips.

1 Sit up straight

Again, sit up straight with your knees bent at 90 degrees and your feet flat on the ground. 2 Spread your knees apart as far as possible.

Always be sure you can hold onto the counter for support and that the floor is clear of rugs and other items such as a trash can. When you try standing exercises for the first time, it is best to have someone with you. Smith Crossing physical therapist Suzanne Billund works with independent living resident Florence Glecier to complete exercises to improve balance.

3 If feel confident, hold the counter with one hand and move the other hand across your body.

Practice sideways motion in the kitchen.

3 Relax and count to 10.

4 Bring your knees back

1 Hold on to the kitchen counter, making certain there are no obstructions.

together and repeat 10 times.

5 As your strength increases you can work up to doing three sets of repetitions.

2 Take side steps from one end of the counter to the other.
