LETTER FROM THE MAYOR

businesses at these events and look forward to seeing you all next summer. Centennial Park West also hosted our 21st Annual Taste of Orland Park the first weekend of August, and the first year at the new venue was definitely a treat. While many of the participating restaurants were long-time local favorites, some were relatively new to the event. It was great to see the large variety of offerings from local franchises as well as many independently owned restaurants. It was a fitting start to the Taste at CPW, with over 30,000 people visiting the event over the three days, a new record for the Taste of Orland Park. Please take a moment to look at our calendar on page 1 to view the events coming this fall. Veterans Day is right around the corner. As a veteran myself, it always fills me with pride seeing the community come together to honor those who have served our great nation by adding veterans’ names to Ara Pace- Place of Peace Memorial in front of Village Hall. If you would like to learn more about this event, visit orlandpark.org/veterans.

and the famous Turkey Trot aren’t too far away. Registration for the Great Pumpkin Party is open for residents until August 20 and opens for non-residents August 21. If you’re interested in the Turkey Trot, the registration deadline is November 15 or until capacity is reached. If you are looking for a great way to incorporate a bit of exercise into your routine, take a look at some of the adult and senior programs offered by the Orland Park Health and Fitness Center and Sportsplex highlighted in this newsletter. for all you do to make Orland Park the wonderful community it is today. The senior population in Orland Park continues to be an integral part of the fiber of our community. Dear Orland Park Seniors,

Summer is winding down, and we have had quite an exciting season in Orland Park!

The brand-new Centennial Park West venue at 15609

Park Station Blvd. is open and looks incredible. The venue has exceeded expectations and I invite everyone to visit the venue when they have a chance. Thank you to everyone who attended our Independence Day Celebration as well as our Centennial Park West Concert Series this summer. These events helped showcase the new concert venue, with national artists like Gary LeVox of Rascal Flatts, the legendary Pat Benatar and Marc Martel. It’s so wonderful to see the community having fun together at the new CPW. We appreciate the support we were given by local

LETTER FROM THE CHIEF OF POLICE

Dear Orland Park Seniors,

of this publication, you will find information regarding these new phone scams, identity theft and more on page 8. Equip yourself with the knowledge you need to stay mindful and safe. The department continues to upgrade and expand its services. Recently, OPPD broke ground for its new 15,400-square-foot Firing Range and EOC Facility, located at 10609 163rd Place. The new facility will be the Village’s Emergency Operations Center and will include a firearms training site and a simulator room for live-fire training, with garage doors to allow vehicles to enter the building. We also opened applications for lateral police officers, allowing us to grow our nationally recognized, award-winning police department. We have enjoyed seeing many of you around the community during the numerous Village events of the summer. Thank you for joining us for National Night Out, Cones with

Cops, Cookout with Cops and for your support of our fundraising efforts for Special Olympics Illinois. This year’s Cops on a Rooftop in conjunction with Dunkin’ Donuts and Special Olympics Bike Ride were massive successes thanks to your participation and involvement. Follow the Orland Park Police Department on Facebook, X or Instagram to stay up-to-date on our police events. Coming up, we will be hosting prescription drop off, Coffee with a Cop events and more. Thank you for your support of the men and women of the Orland Park Police Department as we continue to do our absolute best to provide optimum safety and security services to the Orland Park community.

The safety of residents and guests in Orland Park is the first and foremost priority for the Orland Park Police Department. We are proud of the fact that the Village of Orland Park currently has the fourth lowest number of Index Crimes in the last 25 years and that crime in Orland Park has continued to decrease. With that being said, we must remain actively aware of those who seek to commit crimes in the Orland Park area. We ask that you, as residents of the community, do your part to let us know if you see anything that may seem odd or give you concern. As always, we ask that if you SEE SOMETHING, SAY SOMETHING and give us a call at (708) 349-4111 for non emergencies or 9-1-1 in the event of an emergency. Please be aware of those who wish to take advantage of our senior population, especially with new waves of scams. Within the pages

OCCUPANT WITH AUTISM PROGRAM The Orland Park Police Department has announced the Occupant with Autism program, aimed at providing crucial information to emergency responders during response calls. The initiative uses decals and a registration system to inform first responders about individuals with autism residing in homes or as drivers/passengers in vehicles. By recognizing the decal,

officers can draw upon their autism training and adjust their approach accordingly, understanding that the individual may not communicate, respond to verbal commands or be aware of potential dangers. The program offers free decals to residents of Orland Park as well as non-residents who are employed or attend school in the area. These decals can be affixed near the front door of homes and/or on the rear window of vehicles, effectively alerting law enforcement officers to the presence of an occupant with autism. Residents who wish to participate in the program but prefer not to display the decal can still do so by completing the form and registering without placing the sticker on their home or vehicle.

For more information or to register, visit orlandpark.org/OWAProgram

CODE RED The CodeRED® Emergency Notification System is a high-speed telephone communication service the Village uses to notify residents and businesses of an emergency or urgent situation that requires immediate attention.

Those that wish to register can scan the QR code, or visit orlandpark.org/codered.

TORCH RUN On June 4, the Orland Park Police

Department took part in the annual Law Enforcement Special Olympics Torch run to raise awareness and funds for Illinois Special Olympics. The officers received the torch from the Tinley Park Police Department participants and ran it to the Orland Hills Police Department. The Law Enforcement Torch Run is the single largest year-round fundraiser benefiting Special Olympics of Illinois. With the help of the Law Enforcement Torch Run, athletes and their families are able to participate in the Special Olympics of Illinois at no cost. The Orland Park Police Department has participated every year for the last 31 years.

GUNS & HOSES CHARITY HOCKEY GAME March 16 marked the first ever charity match between the Orland Park Police Department/Orland Fire Protection District and the Eagles Hockey Club. All proceeds benefited the Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics Illinois and the Eagles Hockey Club. Thank you to everyone who attended, participated and donated to such a great cause.

COOKOUT WITH COPS This summer, the Orland Park Police Department held three “Cookout with Cops” events to interact with and educate the community. The free events gave residents of all ages a chance to get to know their local police officers while enjoying hot dogs and snacks in a fun and relaxed setting. Young residents also had the opportunity to see police vehicles up close and enjoy fun, games and prizes. The Orland Park Police Department extends a huge thank you to all attendees. A special thank you goes out to Joey’s for providing free hot dogs to everyone in attendance.

CYCLE ACROSS ILLINOIS On July 14, the 20th annual Cycle Across Illinois made its way to the Orland Park Police Department. The charity bike ride winds through Illinois from Edwardsville to Chicago. This year, the event used the Orland Park Police Department as one of its many checkpoints. Cycle Across Illinois is an annual bicycle ride started in 2005 to remember our fallen heroes and to raise funds to assist their families in the healing process. Funds also support the Illinois Chapter of C.O.P.S. (Concerns of Police Survivors).

SCAM SAFETY

2024 PHONE SCAMS As technology continues to become more prevalent in our lives, thieves continue to hunt for new ways to commit financial scams. Some of the top scams target older adults who may be particularly vulnerable to the tricks and tactics used by today’s scammers. According to AARP, older adults lose billions of dollars each year to scammers, who are always working on upping their efforts to steal consumers’ money and personal information. Learning how to recognize the red flags of a scam will help protect you from becoming a victim. Watch out for these common senior scams:

CHARITY SCAMS

ONLINE SHOPPING

DELIVERY NOTIFICATION SCAMS

Many people enjoy donating to charities, especially during the holidays. But all too often, scammers take advantage of your generosity to solicit donations on behalf of phony charities. Be on the lookout for scammers who contact you via mail, phone, email, social media, or even door-to-door asking for donations.

Shopping online is a quick and convenient way to order holiday gifts, but it also opens the door to the risk of fraud or identity theft. If you utilize online shopping, use a credit card instead of a debit card to deter fraud. Only shop from well-known and trusted online retailers and if a website looks unprofessional or suspicious, it should be avoided.

In recent years, there has been an increase in fake shipping notification emails attempting to steal consumers’ personal information. Scammers may pose as legitimate businesses such as FedEx or UPS and send an email or text with a hyperlink. When clicked, the link could download malware or spyware to the computer and steal information and passwords. Avoid clicking links from unknown sources.

orlandpark.org

8 | ORLAND PARK SENIORS

Scammers are always looking for new ways to get ahold of consumers’ financial and personal information. Use these basic tips to protect yourself and loved ones from fraud: TIPS TO AVOID BEING A VICTIM

TIP 1 | Never give out personal or financial

information online, over the phone, or via text message.

TIP 2 | Never wire money to someone you don’t know.

TIP 3 | Check your credit card and bank statements frequently for errors or fraudulent charges. The sooner you spot suspicious activity, the sooner you can take steps to correct it. Scammers can strike at any time of the year, but it’s especially important to be vigilant around the holiday season. To stay on top of the most recent scams targeting seniors or to report a senior scam, visit the Federal Trade Commission’s consumer website at www.ftc.gov.

EMERGENCY SCAMS Emergency scams or “grandparent scams” target

vulnerable older adults at any time of the year, but these common senior scams may be even more rampant during the holiday season. In an emergency scam, a con artist will call or email a senior posing as a relative in distress. They may ask their target to wire them money or send other personal information. These calls can be very convincing; scammers often use social media or other methods to obtain details about their intended victim’s relatives or friends.

Never send money without first confirming the details of the story with the friend or family member directly.

The Village Hall display cases have been updated. The new display, titled “Fun and Games,” explores the history of various sports, games and other leisurely activities in Orland Park. This display will be up in the Village Hall lobby until the last week of September before switching over to a mini-exhibit titled “Back to School”. VILLAGE HALL DISPLAY CASES

HEALTH & WELLNESS

Senior Heart Health Maintaining heart health is vital for living a long and fulfilling life, especially for older adults. As we age, our hearts become more susceptible to conditions like high blood pressure, heart disease, and stroke. According to the American Heart Association, nearly 80% of people aged 65 and older are battling with at least one form of cardiovascular disease. The risk of heart disease, including coronary artery disease and heart failure, markedly increases with age, with individuals over 65 accounting for more than 70% of all heart failure cases in the U.S. Nutrition for a Healthy Heart

A balanced diet rich in heart healthy nutrients is key for seniors. Numerous studies have shown a strong link between healthy dietary patterns and a reduced risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD). For example, a 2023 meta-analysis found that adherence to a Mediterranean diet was associated with a 25% lower risk of coronary heart disease. Hydration and Heart Health Hydration plays a crucial role in maintaining heart health. Adequate fluid intake helps the heart pump blood more easily through the blood vessels to the muscles. For seniors, staying well hydrated is especially important as their bodies are less able to conserve water, and they may not feel thirsty until dehydration has set in. Regular Check-ups and Screenings Regular health check-ups and screenings are essential for senior heart health. These appointments allow for early detection and management of potential heart issues. These assessments can help identify risk factors such as hypertension, high cholesterol or diabetes, which are controllable with early intervention. Regular visits to a healthcare provider also offer an opportunity to discuss any concerns and adjust treatment as needed. Managing Stress and Mental Well-being The mental health of seniors is just as important as their physical health, especially when it comes to heart health. Chronic stress can lead to high blood pressure, which is a risk factor for heart disease. There’s a close relationship between sleep and mental health. The CDC recommends adults 65 and older get 7-8 hours of sleep each night. Stay Active, Stay Healthy Physical activity is paramount for seniors when it comes to maintaining heart health. Regular exercise helps in managing weight, lowering blood pressure, and reducing the risk of heart disease. Even moderate activities like walking, swimming, or yoga can have significant benefits.
