LETTER FROM THE MAYOR

Another event to add to your calendar is the State of the Village Address on Thursday, May 24, 2022 in the Civic Center. From 10 a.m. until 12 p.m., I will be providing residents with important updates regarding Village projects, public safety and finances. I look forward to seeing you all at this event and encourage you to invite your neighbors and fellow community members. It is vital that we work together as a community to support one another in Orland Park. The Village has a strong partnership with Orland Park’s senior community and we will continue to do everything we can to make sure communication flows smoothly in both directions. You can always reach out with questions, concerns and suggestions by phone, email, on social media and the website. Please take a moment to review the many safety tips within this newsletter for information about the most recent ways criminals are targeting seniors in Orland Park. Many of the crimes are easily preventable if you know what to look for.

Remember that the Police Department is here to help you, so if you suspect something is just not right, give them a call at (708) 349-4111 or dial 9-1-1 in the case of an emergency. Finally, I want to thank you for all that you are already doing to help keep the community safe and for all that you contribute to Orland Park. Seniors are the cornerstone of the Orland Park community and we appreciate hearing from you. It’s springtime in Orland Park, meaning Village trails, parks and facilities are ready for your visits and we have plenty in store for the season. Spring is a season for renewal and growth. In the pages of this magazine, you will find resources to improve mental health, stay fit and active, get involved with the community, reorganize your home and take part in upcoming local events. Once again the Village of Orland Park will be taking part in the Curbside Spring Clean- Up with Waste Management the week of April 11, 2022. We are proud of the fact that the Village of Orland Park currently has the lowest number of Index Crimes since 1994 and crime in Orland Park has continued to decrease. This can be seen in the Village of Orland Park 2021 Crime Statistics, where Index Crimes again decreased by 9.12% since 2020. Violent crime is also the lowest it has been since 2013. Monarch Butterfly Day

Wayfinding Habitats at the Village Hall Green Roof and Stellwagen Farm Prairie and are actively participating in the Monarch Village USA program. Every citizen of Orland Park can make a difference for the monarch butterfly by planting native milkweed and nectar plants to provide a habitat for the monarch butterfly and pollinators in locations where people live, work, learn and play. With everyone’s help, the monarch butterfly will once again flourish across the continent. BURGLARY SAFETY & 9 P.M. ROUTINE

Ruse Burglary Safety

9PM Routine The Village of Orland Park Police Department has joined law enforcement agencies nationwide in reminding residents via social media to “lock it or lose it” to prevent property crimes and burglaries. Dubbed The 9 p.m. Routine , the campaign promotes safe practices to prevent and reduce the number of easily preventable burglaries. Residents are encouraged to set a nightly alarm on their phones, watches or other devices to remind them to: Ruse ploys often begin with the offenders creating an excuse to enter the victim’s home after selecting a home by profiling it. The offenders will typically attempt to gain entry to the home by pretending to be a home repair worker. While one offender keeps the homeowner occupied, one or more additional offenders enter the home undetected and commit a burglary. Ruse burglaries continue to be a concern in the region. This type of crime is often committed by career criminals who specialize in ruse entries and home repair fraud. Seniors are specifically targeted in this type of crime and many times crimes such as these go unreported. These offenders target their victims. They drive through neighborhoods on the lookout for seniors doing yard work or will follow them home from grocery stores or pharmacies.

Orland Park Neighborhood Watch Program

Can I register multiple cameras?

Yes. While completing the registration form, list the number of external surveillance cameras available. If you are registering cameras for multiple homes or business locations, please complete separate forms for each location. Only videos you provide the Orland Park Police Department with will be viewed. This program does not have access to live video cameras, nor will video footage be obtained without your consent. How do I register? Visit orlandpark.org/watch to register. Once registered, you will receive a window cling to hang on a front window/door to show that you are part of the Neighborhood Watch Program. Registration to this program is completely voluntary and can be withdrawn at any time. What footage will be used?

The Orland Park Police Department has created a new resource for Orland Park citizens and business owners to assist in crime prevention and crime solving efforts. The Orland Park Police Department is asking residents and businesses to voluntarily register their personal security camera information with the Orland Park Police Department. After a crime occurs, often times the first step in the police investigation is canvassing the area for security cameras, that may have captured evidence of the crime. While it would still be necessary for the police to canvass an area during an investigation, a compiled database of security camera information would help

The registration would consist of providing the resident or business location, the number of cameras present and contact information for footage viewing. After registering your cameras, the police department will not have access to your footage. That would have to be provided by the owner on a case by case basis and only select members of the police department would have access to your contact information. HEALTHY BRAIN HABITS

The Orland Park Police Department recognizes the need for assistance in addressing the increasing mental health crises. A Crisis Intervention Team was formed and formally trained to respond to calls involving mental health-related circumstances under the guidance of and cooperation with Trinity Services’ mental health professionals. Mental Health & The Orland Park Police Department thorough and in-depth assistance for those in need, when they need it most. Together, we hope to provide those in need with the services they need with the Mental Health Response Unit. Trinity Services’ Orland Park facility is located at 14315 108th Avenue, Suite #222. On Friday, March 4, the Orland Park’s Veterans’ Commission co-hosted a Military Care Package event with Apple Chevrolet. The care packages contain food and personal care items that will be delivered to active military members. An abundance of support was received from Apple Chevrolet and members of the community.

Village of Orland Park residents who are Waste Management customers can utilize the At Your Door service for this type of request. Visit wmatyourdoor. com to complete a request form. Requests for pick up can also be made via telephone at (800) 449-7587 between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m., CST Monday through Friday. Once you have sorted everything in one room, take a moment to congratulate yourself on your progress and move on to the next room. Plan For The Items You No Longer Need “Downsizing feels complicated, but there are only five choices for each item in your home,” Roemer explains, and provides the key steps to ensuring success. 1. Select items to keep which you regularly use and small treasures that you truly love. Ric Roemer, founder of Creative Home Services, has helped hundreds of residents streamline the process of moving to Smith Crossing, a life plan community in Orland Park. He guides the process of downsizing so they can sell their home and make sure they bring their treasures with them as they embrace a new lifestyle. “Smith Crossing offers a variety of floor plans, and all include ample storage,” says executive director Amanda Mauceri. “Our residents find that they still have space for the things they need and love.” For those that need help with their moving process, Mauceri and her colleagues recommend working with Creative Home Services because “The trustworthy, experienced local professionals work exclusively

with older adults and understand their unique needs.” Roemer first meets in prospective clients’ homes to help them devise a plan and to prepare a budget. Then they work side- by-side with clients through every step in the process: sorting belongings; organizing items for an estate sale; coordinating donation details; packing; managing the moving process and setting up their new home at Smith Crossing on the day they move there. Choose a Place to Start Getting started is often the biggest challenge. Roemer suggests the best strategy is to choose a single room. “Go through every closet, shelf, tabletop and drawer,” Roemer says. “Make a choice about everything in that one

Saving Cherished Memories “Often the hardest items to part with are things of sentimental value,” Roemer says. “It isn’t the item itself that is important, but the memory it holds.” If these sentimental items are large, he recommends photographing them and creating a photobook. Seeing a photo of the treasure from your honeymoon will likely spark the same special recollection of a wonderful time as the item itself. Then, you can focus on making new memories in your new home!”

2. Choose treasures to give to friends or family and offer these items to them, because they may have practical or sentimental value. If these offers are declined, decide if you should donate or sell them. 3. Gather items to sell because they have value or are useful. Consider organizing an estate sale or selling items online. Although these sales take time, they can help offset the cost of moving, packing and unpacking services.

4. Select a charity that collects and resells items to support a cause that is important to you. Some provide pick-up services, but many have a limited ability to accept large items such as furniture. A bit of research can help clarify what items charities need most. 5. Discard items that are no longer useful. Moving provides the perfect opportunity to clear out any extra clutter you may have around the house.

Aid For Ukrainian Refugee Event

The Village of Orland Park hosted a donation drive for Ukrainian Refugees which was held on March 19, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., at Village Hall. Volunteers and sponsors helped make this event a huge success. Although physical donations are no longer being accepted, you can make a monetary donation and view a list of our sponsors at orlandpark.org/ ukraine.

Concert In The Park

Market at the Park returns to Crescent Park again this summer. Featuring a variety of food (ready to eat, specialty and more), gardening, artisanal and handmade arts, crafts, vintage and décor as well as free weekly entertainment. This year there will be an expanded Market Roamers children’s program. This event occurs from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Low Impact Exercise

Aquatic exercises are low impact on your joints and can be beneficial for individuals living with arthritis, and lessen pain for those with osteoporosis. Water exercises have also been proven to improve heart health and reduce stress. You can do aquatic exercises even if you don't know how to swim. Try starting with water walking. In water that’s about waist-high, walk across the pool swinging your arms (as you do when walking on land), keeping your back straight, and avoid walking on your tiptoes. Anyone Can Do It 2

Lots of Options

The water provides resistance to strengthen your muscles. There is also a variety of resistance equipment that you can use to progress the resistance. Try exercising with water bells or even a pool noodle to increase muscle strength! It can be social (if you’d like it to be!). There are a variety of options! Options vary between types of pools, water temperatures, and different modes of exercise. You can try water walking, swimming, attend an Aqua Aerobics class or even an Arthritis Aqua class catered to individuals who have arthritis – just to name a few of these options! To increase resistance as your hands and arms move through the water, wear hand webs or other resistance devices. Water shoes can help you maintain better traction on the bottom of the pool.
