35th Annual Orland Open Spelling Bee Dr. Bill Smith organized the first Orland Park Open Spelling Bee in 1979. “We started the contest in 1979 at the Presbyterian Church in Orland Park,” said Smith, retired school superintendent of Alsip School District 126. “I was the first caller,” he added. More than 80 spellers signed up to compete in the bee held at the Orland Park Civic Center. All were welcomed by Mayor Dan McLaughlin and judging the contest were Trustess Pat Gira and Ed Schussler and Village Clerk John Mehalek. Brian Sullivan, of Orland Park, spelled his way to the top to win the spelling bee. Sullivan correctly spelling “ukulele” and “tsunami” for the win. Runner-up was Tracy Brockmeier, of Chicago, and in third place was Steve Lange, of Orland Park. “This is a great event that has become an important part of the village’s history,” said Orland Park Mayor Dan McLaughlin. “We are grateful to Dr. Smith for the passion he shares for this event, for having organized it for the last 35 years and for all that he does to promote a great hometown contest,” the mayor said. Trophy winners in the ages 8 to 10 category were Michael Trombetta, High Point School, Orland Park, first place; Olivia Sears, Incarnation School, Crestwood, second place; and Adele Szaflarski, Centennial School, Orland Park, third place. The Junior High winner was Indya Gettings, of Huth Middle School, Matteson. Meghana Kamineni, Lockport Junior High, Lockport, took second. Mehmood Hayear, of Montessori School, Lemont, took third. The High School winner was Christian Perez, of Argo High School. Jeffrey Hall, Palatine High School, took second. Matthew Brennan, Andrew High School, finished third.
