LETTER FROM THE MAYOR
We also hosted our 20th Annual Taste of Orland Park the first weekend of August, and this year was definitely a treat. While many of the participating restaurants were long time local favorites, some were relatively new to the event. It was great to see the large variety of offerings from local franchises as well as many independently-owned restaurants. It was a fitting end to our 20th year on the Village green, as next year, the Taste of Orland Park will be moving to the new Centennial Park West venue. You can view information about the renovations on the Village website. Please take a moment to look at our calendar on page 1 to view the events coming this fall. Veterans Day is right around the corner. As a veteran myself, it always fills me with pride seeing the community come together to honor those who have served our great nation by adding veterans’ names to Ara Pace- Place of Peace Memorial in front of Village Hall. If you would like to learn more about this event, visit orlandpark.org/veterans. In addition, the famous Turkey Trot is approaching quickly! Join us on Thanksgiving morning on a 2.5 mile cross-country run or
cheer on your family members from the side lines! Don’t forget, if you’re interested in this event the registration deadline is November 15 or until capacity is reached. If you are looking for a great way to incorporate a bit of exercise into your routine, take a look at some of the great adult and senior programs offered by the OPHFC and Sportsplex highlighted in this newsletter. each and every one of you for all you do to make Orland Park the wonderful community it is today. The senior population in Orland Park continues to be an integral part of the fiber of our community. I am amazed by your influence, strength and the example each of you set for the rest of the community. As we head into the season of giving thanks, I want to thank As always, if you have questions and/or suggestions, please reach out to any of the Village’s departments directly or visit us online at orlandpark.org.
Dear Orland Park Seniors,
It’s autumn in Orland Park, one of my favorite times of the year. Orland Park’s trails, parks and facilities are ready for your visits and we have plenty in store for the season. Market at the Park was a successful anchor of our summer events. This year’s 10 full weeks of markets at Crescent Park featured over 50 vendors, free live entertainment and a fun, community atmosphere. Thank you to everyone who attended our July 4 event as well as our Centennial Park West Concerts this summer. It was so wonderful to see the community having fun together. We appreciate the support we were given by local businesses at this event and look forward to seeing you all next summer.

Dear Orland Park Seniors,
The safety of residents and guests in Orland Park is the first and foremost priority for the Orland Park Police Department. We are proud of the fact that the Village of Orland Park is still seeing lower index crimes than before the pandemic. As property and violent crime rose to record levels throughout the Chicagoland area, by contrast, crime in the Village of Orland Park has consistently trended down over the last five years, with numbers lower than what the Village had pre-pandemic. SENIOR SAFETY
PREVENTING RUSE BURGLARIES
Ruse burglaries continue to be a concern in the region. This type of crime is often committed by career criminals specializing in ruse entries and home repair fraud. Ruse ploys often begin with the offenders creating an excuse to enter the victim’s home. After selecting a home by profiling it, the offenders may claim to be a utility worker, Village employee or a contractor. They will attempt to gain entry the home using the ruse of needing to check on something urgent, say a pipe, water leak, electrical fuse or other utility. While one offender keeps the homeowner occupied, one or more additional offenders enter the home undetected and commit a burglary. Seniors are specifically targeted in this type of crime and many times crimes such as these go unreported. Offenders will target their victims by driving through neighborhoods looking for seniors doing yard work or by following them home from grocery stores or pharmacies. Residents should also observe their neighbors’ homes for suspicious activities. Be a good neighbor and remind others of this type of crime in the region. Writing down license plate numbers and vehicle descriptions may also assist police in locating offenders.
If you are approached by someone purporting to be a worker needing to enter your house, DO NOT LET THEM IN without first contacting the utility, Village or the police. By requesting identification from the worker you may prevent yourself from becoming a victim. The offender will most likely move on if they suspect you are aware of their intent. The Village of Orland Park provides employees with identification cards which are required to be worn. Utility companies such as ComEd, Nicor, Comcast and AT&T also have identification cards. Utility workers will also have utility service vehicles, so be wary of “workers” without an official vehicle. Utility workers from those companies which provide services to your home will generally only be coming to your home at your request, so if someone shows up at your door, verify who they are.
orlandpark.org
8 | ORLAND PARK SENIORS
Additionally, avoid home repair scams by never allowing someone to perform driveway sealing or other repairs on the spot. Residents are advised not to let transient workers perform repair work without providing a business card, allowing you to check on the reputation of the business. If ever in doubt, or if the person is persistent in their attempts to enter your home, close and lock your door and call 9-1-1 immediately. The Police Department would rather investigate an innocent misunderstanding than have a resident fall victim of this type of crime. The Orland Park Police Department urges residents to be observant of their surroundings and report suspicious persons or activities when
they are occurring. As always, when you SEE SOMETHING, SAY SOMETHING! Dial 9-1-1 immediately if you suspect you are being followed home or if someone comes to your door unsolicited and attempts to gain entry.
1. Be observant of surroundings and report suspicious activity. 2. If approached by someone purporting to be a worker, DO NOT LET THEM IN YOUR HOUSE. 3. If ever in doubt, or if person persists, call 9-1-1 immediately.

SENIOR SAFETY
HOLIDAY PHONE SCAMS ‘Tis the season of joy and peace, but
unfortunately, the holidays are also a prime time for financial scams. Some of the top scams target older adults who may be particularly vulnerable to the tricks and tactics used by today’s scammers. According to AARP, older adults lose billions of dollars each year to scammers, who ramp up their efforts to steal consumers’ money and personal information during the busy holiday season. Learning how to recognize the red flags of a scam will help protect you from becoming a victim. Watch out for these common holiday senior scams:
CHARITY SCAMS Many people enjoy donating to charities during the holidays. But all too often, scammers take advantage of your generosity to solicit donations on behalf of phony charities. Be on the lookout for scammers who contact you via mail, phone, email, social media, or door-to-door asking for donations. Always contact the charity directly to make a donation.
ONLINE SHOPPING SCAMS Shopping online is a quick and convenient way to order holiday gifts, but it also opens the door to the risk of fraud or identity theft. If you utilize online shopping, use a credit card instead of a debit card to deter fraud. Only shop from well-known and trusted online retailers, and avoid websites that look unprofessional or suspicious.
DELIVERY NOTIFICATIONS SCAMS In recent years, there has been an increase in fake shipping notification emails attempting to steal consumers’ personal information. Scammers may pose as legitimate businesses such as FedEx or UPS and send an email with a hyperlink. When clicked, the link could download malware or spyware to the computer and steal information and passwords. Avoid clicking links from unknown sources .
orlandpark.org
10 | ORLAND PARK SENIORS
Scammers are always looking for new ways to obtain consumers’ financial and personal information. Use these basic tips to protect yourself and loved ones from fraud: Tips to avoid being a victim TIP 1 | Never give out personal or financial information online, over the phone, or via text message. TIP 2 | Never wire money to someone you don’t know. TIP 3 | Check your credit card and bank statements frequently for errors or fraudulent charges. The sooner you spot suspicious activity, the sooner you can take steps to correct it. ---
EMERGENCY SCAMS
Emergency scams or “grandparent” scams target vulnerable older adults at any time of the year, but these common senior scams may be even more rampant during the holiday season. In an emergency scam, a con artist will call or email posing as a relative in distress. They may ask their target to wire them money or send personal information. These calls can be very convincing; scammers often use social media or other methods to obtain details about their intended victim’s relatives or friends. Never send money without first confirming the details of the story with the friend or family member directly.
---
Scammers can strike at any time of the year, but it’s especially important to be vigilant around the holiday season. To stay on top of the most recent scams targeting seniors or to report a senior scam, visit the Federal Trade
Commission’s consumer website at www.ftc.gov.

the group of Smith Crossing residents to locations featured in her books, Camalliere will share details about Lemont’s fascinating history and join the members for lunch. Gather many opinions about book selections Both Hett and Ryan highly recommend conducting an annual survey to learn what book club members want to read. Ryan attends the Renaissance Academy program at Saint Xavier University. “Once a semester the Renaissance Academy hosts a book discussion luncheon for seniors,” says Ryan. “Usually about 75 to 100 people attend and participants are encouraged to talk about books their group enjoyed. It is a great way to get recommendations.” Work with the local library Both book clubs at Smith Crossing work with the librarians at the Orland Park Public Library to secure copies of their monthly book selections. The Orland Park Public Library offers a Book Nook, shelved with multiple copies of popular books for small book clubs.
Book clubs inspire camaraderie and conversation C.S. Lewis once wrote, “We read to know that we are not alone.” For senior citizens, the companionship of the books themselves can truly blossom when they share what they’ve read with others. “My favorite part of our book club absolutely is our camaraderie,” says Smith Crossing resident Bobbie Hett, who has moderated the women’s book club for seven years. “We meet new friends and get to know each other better when we express their views about the books we select for our group.” For seniors hoping to launch their own book club, Ryan and Hett offer advice about how to make it a success.
Explore beyond the book “The more outside elements we include in our discussion the more we enjoy it,” says Ryan. To enhance the book club conversations, Ryan often brings in speakers on topics related to the books the group is reading. Guest speakers on topics, ranging from the experiences of prisoners of war to the science of nuclear power. Keep an open mind “We were surprised to learn that two women in our group love books about zombies,” says Hett. “Others weren’t enthusiastic about trying the genre. Still, our zombie lovers persisted so our book club has added a book the two suggested to our list for this year.” Part of the appeal of the book club is embracing new genres and trying titles that are outside of typical choices can be expansive. Looking for a great read? Consider some popular selections picked by Ryan and Hetts book club on the right! This article was submitted by Smith Crossing, a senior living community located in Orland Park (10501 Emilie Lane). To learn about Smith Crossing, visit smithcrossing.org or call 708-326-2300.
For larger groups, the library staff is happy to order additional materials through interlibrary loans. The librarians also share book recommendations and their expertise. “Reading is a lifelong commitment and helping to foster that passion for people at any age is a priority for us,” says librarian Natalie Finlon. Provide a variety of formats The Orland Park Public Library offers large print editions and audiobooks of many selections. Securing copies of the book selection in different formats makes the book club more inclusive. “Some of our members have declining eyesight and others enjoy listening to the books while they exercise,” Ryan explains. Choosing books available in multiple formats removes barriers to participation.
