LETTER FROM THE CHIEF OF POLICE

Dear Orland Park Seniors,

of this publication, you will find information regarding online exchanges. Equip yourself with the knowledge you need to stay mindful and safe.

The police department has also added two incredible programs for residents to take part in. Learn about the Orland Park Police Departments Occupant with Autism program (Pg. 5) and Fusus program. (Pg. 7) Please take the time to follow the Orland Park Police Department on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram to stay up-to-date on important safety information, programs and events. Thank you for your support of the men and women of the Orland Park Police Department as we continue to do our absolute best to provide optimum safety and security services to the Orland Park community.

The safety of residents and guests in Orland Park is the first and foremost priority for the Orland Park Police Department. We are proud of the fact that the Village of Orland Park has seen Index Crimes drop below pre-pandemic levels and crime in Orland Park has continued to decrease. With that being said, we must remain actively aware of those who seek to commit crimes in the Orland Park area. We ask that you, as residents of the community, do your part to let us know if you see anything that may seem odd or give you concern. As always, we ask that if you SEE SOMETHING, SAY SOMETHING and give us a call at (708) 349-4111 for non emergencies or 9-1-1 in the event of an emergency. Please be aware of those who try to take advantage of our senior population, especially during online shopping. Within the pages

I want to personally thank the families and friends who took

the time to attend our community outreach events in 2023. As we continue our outreach programs in 2024, we invite you to stay active and participate. Our department events are not only excellent ways to stay in touch with safety in Orland Park, but also foster and grow relationships with our officers. Our first Southwest Suburban Safety meeting was held at the Orland Park Civic center. This informational event allowed local agencies to provide updates on safety in the region and allowed residents to ask questions. You can view a recording of this meeting on the Village’s YouTube channel.

OCCUPANT WITH AUTISM PROGRAM The Orland Park Police Department has announced the Occupant with Autism program, aimed at providing crucial information to emergency responders during response calls. The initiative uses decals and a registration system to inform first responders about individuals with autism residing in homes or as drivers/passengers in vehicles. By recognizing the decal,

officers can draw upon their autism training and adjust their approach accordingly, understanding that the individual may not communicate, respond to verbal commands, or be aware of potential dangers. The program offers free decals to residents of Orland Park as well as non-residents who are employed or attend school in the area. These decals can be affixed near the front door of homes and/or on the rear window of vehicles, effectively alerting law enforcement officers to the presence of an occupant with autism. Residents who wish to participate in the program but prefer not to display the decal can still do so by completing the form and registering without placing the sticker on their home or vehicle.

For more information or to register, visit orlandpark.org/OWAProgram

CODE RED Orland Park CodeRED Emergency Notification SystemThe CodeRED® Emergency Notification System is a high-speed telephone communication service the Village uses to notify residents and businesses of an emergency or urgent situation that requires immediate attention.

COMMUNITY

COOKIES WITH COPS

The Orland Park Police Department held its annual “Cookies with Cops” event to interact with and educate the community. The free event gave residents of all ages a chance to get to know their local police officers while enjoying complimentary cookies in a fun and relaxed setting. The Orland Park Police Department extends a huge thank you to all attendees, Simon Properties for hosting and a special thank you goes out to Mrs. Fields and Great American Cookie for providing free cookies to everyone in attendance.

TOYS FOR TOTS Over the holiday season, the Village of Orland Park continued its annual campaign to collect toys for children in need on behalf of Toys for Tots. Community members were able to donate new and unwrapped toys to collection bins at Village facilities. The toys were then collected and delivered to the Toys for Tots organization by the Orland Park Police Department. Thank you to the Orland Park community for your continued kindness and generosity.

SOUTHWEST SUBURBAN SAFETY MEETING

The Village of Orland Park hosted the first ever Southwest Suburban Safety Meeting at the Orland Park Civic Center. Hosted by Orland Township Supervisor Paul O’Grady. The event focused on topics such as regional safety, retail safety, SAFE-T Act and upcoming technology. The meeting featured: • Orland Park Mayor Keith Pekau • Orland Park Police Chief Eric Rossi • Tinley Park Mayor Timothy Glotz • Tinley Park Police Chief Thomas Tilton • Cook County Commissioner Sean Morrison

A recording of the event is on the Village’s YouTube channel, YouTube.com/@VillageofOrlandPark.

FUSUS The Orland Park Police Department announced the launch of the groundbreaking Fusus program, a cutting-edge initiative aimed at integrating business and home security camera assets to create a safer Orland Park. Through this voluntary program, businesses and homeowners can contribute to the collective security of Orland Park by granting the Police Department knowledge of camera locations and access to camera footage in the event of a crime. By doing so, participants become an invaluable resource in the fight against crime, helping law enforcement respond more effectively and efficiently to incidents as they occur.

ONLINE SAFETY

ONLINE EXCHANGES

In a new digital age, in-person online exchanges bridge the gap between physical and digital commerce. They occur when a potential buyer visits an online marketplaces to find an item they are looking for, then meets up with the individual in-person to see the item in person and/or complete the transaction. For years, the Village of Orland Park has offered utilization of the Orland Park Police Department parking lot and lobby for completion of online transactions. The premise of this offer is to create a safe environment to conduct business which would deter sellers from ripping off potential customers and potential customers stealing from the sellers. “The use of the lobby and parking lot has been offered for years and is currently being offered to deter any possible internet-related crime that may come along with such exchanges,” says Village of Orland Park Police Chief Eric Rossi. “Internet sales are common practice, and it is important to conduct such sales and purchases in a safe area that is under video surveillance.”

Police department staff will not oversee or be responsible for such transactions. Rather, the space is intended to assist in the safe exchange of goods and money without incident.

Internet marketplace Craigslist offers the following advice for personal safety: When meeting someone for the first time, please remember to:

Insist on a public meeting place.

WINTER SAFETY

When the temperature drops, older adults run a higher risk of health problems and injuries related to the weather, including hypothermia, frostbite, and falls in ice and snow. Like most things in life, it is better to be prepared. Here are a few precautions everyone should take, especially older adults, during the winter.

Injury While Shoveling Snow

Falls

Frostbite

It is easy to slip and fall in the winter, especially in icy and snowy conditions.

Frostbite occurs when your body experiences damage to the skin that can go all the way down to the bone. Not surprisingly, extreme cold can cause frostbite. It is most likely to occur on body parts farthest away from your heart. Common places include your nose, ears, cheeks, chin, fingers, and toes. In severe cases, frostbite can result in loss of limbs. People with heart disease and other circulation problems are at a higher risk. Cover up! All parts of your body should be covered when you go out in the cold. If your skin turns red or dark or starts hurting, go inside right away. WARNING SIGNS | Know the warning signs of frostbite: skin that’s white or ashy or grayish yellow; skin that feels hard or waxy; numbness. If you think you or someone else has frostbite, call for medical help immediately. If frostbite occurs, run the affected area under warm (not hot) water.

It’s one of the evils of winter – snow shoveling. If you choose to shovel, take some precautions.

• Make sure steps and PRECAUTIONS TO TAKE

Remember, when it’s cold outside, your heart works

walkways are clear before you walk. Be especially careful if you see wet pavements that could be iced over. • Clear away snow and salt your walkways at home, or hire someone to do it. • Wear boots with non-skid soles – this will prevent you from slipping. • If you use a cane, replace the rubber tip before it is worn smooth. • Consider an ice pick-like attachment that fits onto the end of the cane for additional traction.

double time to keep you warm. Strenuous activities like shoveling snow may put too much strain on your heart, especially if you have heart disease. Shoveling can also be dangerous if you have problems with balance or have osteoporosis. Ask your healthcare provider whether shoveling or other work in the snow is safe for you.

Fires and Carbon Monoxide Poisoning

Hypothermia

PRECAUTIONS TO TAKE

• Call an inspector to have your chimneys and flues inspected – preferred annually. • Open a window (when using a kerosene stove) – just a crack will do. • Place smoke detectors and battery-operated carbon monoxide detectors in strategic places – especially in areas where you use fireplaces, wood stoves, or kerosene heaters. • Make sure space heaters are at least 3 feet away from anything that might catch fire, such as curtains, bedding, and furniture. • Never try to heat your home using a gas stove, charcoal grill, or other stoves not made for home heating. • If there is a fire, don’t try to put it out. Leave the house and call 911.

• Stay indoors (or don’t stay outside for very long). • Keep indoor temperature at 65 degrees or warmer. • Stay dry because wet clothing chills your body more quickly. • Dress smart – Layer up! Wearing 2 or 3 thinner layers of loose-fitting clothing is warmer than a single layer of thick clothing. hats, gloves (or preferably mittens), winter coat, boots, and a scarf to cover your mouth and nose. weak; problems walking; slowed breathing or heart rate. Call 911 if you think you or someone else has hypothermia. PRECAUTIONS TO TAKE • Essential winter wear: Hypothermia occurs when your body temperature drops to a dangerous level. Your body temperature can drop when you are out in the cold for an extended time because it begins to lose heat quickly. Older adults are at an increased risk of hypothermia due to changes that happen to your body with aging. WARNING SIGNS | Cold skin that is pale or ashy; feeling very tired, confused and sleepy; feeling

During the winter months, it is common to use the fireplace or other heating sources, such as natural gas, kerosene, and other fuels. Unless fireplaces, wood and gas stoves and gas appliances are properly vented, cleaned, and used, they can leak dangerous amounts of carbon monoxide—a deadly gas that you cannot see or smell. These and other appliances, such as space heaters, can also be fire hazards. WARNING SIGNS | If you think you may have carbon monoxide poisoning, get into fresh air and get medical care immediately.

HEALTH & WELLNESS

Make Every Bite Count Healthy eating is an important part of staying healthy as you age. Choosing healthy foods can help you maintain a healthy weight, get the nutrients you need, lower your risk of chronic disease, and help you stay active and independent. Did you know that the definition of healthy eating changes a little as you age? For example, as you grow older, your metabolism slows down, so you need fewer calories than before. Your body also needs more of certain nutrients. That means it’s more important than ever to choose foods that give you the best nutritional value. For most individuals, no matter their age or health status, achieving a healthy dietary pattern will require changes in food and beverage choices. The good news is that a healthy dietary pattern is not a rigid prescription. It is important to create a framework of core elements within which individuals can make tailored and affordable, nutrient-dense choices that meet their personal preferences and cultural traditions.

GUIDELINES TO HELP

1 | Follow a healthy dietary pattern at every life stage.

2 | Customize and enjoy nutrient-dense food and beverage choices to reflect personal preferences, cultural traditions, and budgetary considerations. 3 | Focus on meeting food group needs with nutrient-dense foods and beverages and stay within calorie limits. 4 | Limit foods and beverages higher in added sugars, saturated fat, and sodium, and limit alcoholic beverages.

Shop Smart to Stay on Budget

The cost of food can eat up a big part of your budget. Once you have a budget, consider these tips while food shopping: • Consider store brands — they usually cost less. • Use coupons when you can. • Try to buy in bulk, but only buy a size you can use before it goes bad. • Focus on affordable fruits and vegetables like bananas, apples, oranges, cabbage, sweet potatoes, dark-green leafy vegetables, green peppers, and regular carrots.

groceries or prepare your meals? Pathlights offers a program where nutritious meals are delivered to the home for people who are either temporarily or permanently unable to manage meal preparation and access food. They also offer meal options for people who require special diets and other medically necessary special dietary meals. This service doubles as a well-being check – necessary for individuals who experience social isolation. For more information, visit pathlights.org or call (708) 361-0219.
