LETTER FROM THE MAYOR

Nicole La Ha for spending time with residents at our Pancakes with the Mayor (and Santa) event. Please continue to check the Village website and social media for updates on events planned for 2026. I look forward to seeing familiar faces and welcoming those who may be attending for the first time. If you’re looking to stay active this winter, I encourage you to explore the many adult and senior programs available through the Orland Park Health and Fitness Center and Sportsplex. These programs offer a great way to stay moving, meet new people and maintain a healthy, active lifestyle. Staying connected with our senior community is very important to me. If you have questions, ideas or concerns, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me directly at jimdodge@ orlandpark.org or by phone at 708-403-6160. Thank you for your continued trust and support. It is truly an honor to serve you.

Dear Orland Park Seniors,

I hope you are doing well and staying warm this winter. It has been a busy and enjoyable season in Orland Park, and it has been great seeing so many of you out in the community, reconnecting with friends and taking part in Village activities. Over the past few months, we’ve shared many meaningful moments together, from honoring our veterans on Veterans Day to celebrating the holiday season throughout our parks and facilities. Most recently, the Christmas Tree Lighting, Festival and Parade brought neighbors together for food, music and holiday cheer. Moments like these remind us how fortunate we are to live in such a close-knit community, and they leave me feeling hopeful as we look ahead to 2026. Please take a moment to review the calendar on the previous page for events happening this winter and spring. The Village offers a wide variety of programs, outings and special events designed with our senior community in mind, providing opportunities to stay active, social and engaged throughout the year.

LETTER FROM THE CHIEF OF POLICE

With shorter days ahead, please remember to keep outdoor lights on during evening hours and ensure your vehicles and homes are locked. If you notice anything unusual or concerning, please don’t hesitate to report it.

Please take the time to follow the Orland Park Police Department on Facebook, X or Instagram to stay up-to-date on important safety information, programs and events. Thank you for your support of the men and women of the Orland Park Police Department as we continue to do our absolute best to provide optimal safety and security services to the Orland Park community. Eric Rossi | Chief of Police Orland Park Warming Center The Orland Park Police Station, located at 15100 S. Ravinia Avenue, is the Village’s main warming center. During the winter months, residents are encouraged to monitor the weather, and to check on elderly and disabled relatives, friends and neighbors who may be more at risk to extreme cold.

Dear Orland Park Seniors,

The safety of residents and guests in Orland Park remains the top priority for the Orland Park Police Department. We are proud to share that Index Crimes continue to trend below our 25-year average, and overall crime in Orland Park continues to decline. As we welcome the winter season, we must remain vigilant. Seasonal changes can bring new opportunities for criminal activity, and we ask that you continue to be observant in your neighborhoods.

emergencies, call us at (708) 349-4111, and dial 9-1-1 in the event of an emergency. We are excited to announce that the department will be implementing a new pilot program beginning in February, 2026. The Cruise Lights Pilot Program will increase officer visibility as part of the department’s ongoing commitment to proactive, visible and community-focused policing. Learn more about this pilot program on page 5.

CRUISE LIGHTS PILOT PROGRAM

The Orland Park Police Department will soon launch a new pilot program meant to increase officer visibility though the expanded use of cruise lights.

Expected to debut in February 2026, Cruise lights are designed to increase visibility without signaling an emergency response. Unlike traditional emergency lights, which are high intensity, flashing red and blue strobes often accompanied by a siren, cruise lights are steady, non flashing red and blue lights used without sirens. This feature is already equipped on department squad cars and will now be used more regularly during routine patrols. Residents and visitors may notice patrol vehicles displaying cruise lights as officers patrol commercial areas, business districts, parking lots and residential neighborhoods, particularly during evening and nighttime hours. Motorists are reminded that they are only required to pull over when a police vehicle displays flashing red and blue lights, especially when accompanied by a siren. When lights are steady and not flashing, officers are conducting routine patrols, and drivers should continue traveling normally. The Cruise Lights Patrol Program reflects the Orland Park Police Department’s ongoing commitment to proactive, visible and community-focused policing. As the initiative continues, the department welcomes resident feedback and encourages the community to share their perspectives as officers work to maintain a safe and welcoming environment throughout the Village. To share your perspectives, please call (708) 349-4111 or email communications@orlandpark.org.

WINTER SAFETY

SHOVELING SNOW SENIOR WINTER SAFETY TIPS When the temperature drops, older adults run a higher risk of health problems and injuries related to the weather, including hypothermia, frostbite and falls in ice and snow. Like most things in life, it is bet ter to be prepared. Here are a few precautions everyone should take, especially older adults, during the winter. Snow shoveling is one of the many evils of winter. If you choose to shovel, take some precautions. Remember, when it’s cold outside, your heart works double time to keep you warm. Strenuous activities like shoveling snow may put too much strain on your heart, especially if you have heart disease. Shoveling can also be dangerous if you have problems with balance or have osteoporosis. Ask your healthcare provider whether shoveling or other work in the snow is safe for you.

FALLS It is easy to slip and fall in the winter, especially in icy and snowy conditions. Below is a list of precautions to take when braving the wintery conditions: •Make sure steps and walkways are clear before you walk. Be especially careful if you see wet pavements that could be iced over. •Clear away snow and salt your walkways at home, or hire someone to do it. •Wear boots with non-skid soles, as this will prevent you from slipping. •If you use a cane, replace the rubber tip before it is worn smooth. •Consider an ice pick-like attachment that fits onto the end of the cane for additional traction.

FROSTBITE Frostbite occurs when your body experiences damage to the skin that can go all the way down to the bone. Not surprisingly, extreme cold can cause frostbite. It is most likely to occur on body parts farthest away from your heart. Common places include your nose, ears, cheeks, chin, fingers and toes. In severe cases, frostbite can result in loss of limbs. People with heart disease and other circulation problems are at a higher risk. All parts of your body should be covered when you go out in the cold. If your skin turns red, dark or starts hurting, go inside right away.

orlandpark.org

6 | ORLAND PARK SENIORS

HYPOTHERMIA Hypothermia occurs when your body temperature drops to a dangerous level. Your body temperature can drop when you are out in the cold for an extended time because it begins to lose heat quickly. Older adults are at an increased risk of hypothermia due to changes that happen to your body with aging.

FIRES AND CARBON MONOXIDE POISONING

During the winter months, it is common to use the fireplace or other heating sources, such as natural gas, kerosene and other fuels. Unless fireplaces, wood and gas stoves and gas appliances are properly vented, cleaned and used, they can leak dangerous amounts of carbon monoxide—a deadly gas that you cannot see or smell. These and other appliances, such as space heaters, can also be fire hazards. WARNING SIGNS | If you think you may have carbon monoxide poisoning, get into fresh air and get medical care immediately. Symptoms include: headache, weakness, nausea or vomiting, dizziness, confusion or blurred vision.

The Village of Orland Park is dedicated to fostering a strong sense of community through the Orland Park Heritage Sites’ programs and exhibits, while preserving and safeguarding artifacts that tell the story of Orland’s rich history and its connections to local, state and national events. The area now known as Orland Park was first settled in the 1830s. The Village of Orland Park was incorporated in 1892, with Senator John Humphrey serving as its first Village President. The Village Hall display cases are updated seasonally. The current display focuses on the history of the Christmas season in Orland Park. WINTER HEALTH

STAYING ACTIVE DURING THE WINTER Winter weather can make staying active feel more challenging, but keeping your body moving is just as important during the colder months as it is the rest of the year. Regular physical activity helps maintain strength, balance, flexibility and even boosts your mood. Even small amounts of movement can make a difference. During winter, many people spend more time indoors, making indoor activities especially beneficial. Simple movements such as stretching, walking inside your home or building, or doing chair exercises can help keep muscles and joints flexible. Light strength activities, like lifting your arms or slowly standing up from a chair, also support balance and everyday mobility. Staying active in winter does not have to be difficult or time-consuming. Activities such as dancing to music, doing light household chores or exercising with a friend can make movement more enjoyable. Every bit of activity counts, and staying consistent can help support health and independence throughout the winter season. For those who enjoy being outdoors, winter exercise can still be safe with a few precautions. Below are five tips from the National Institute on Aging for exercising safely in cold weather.

PATHLIGHTS

Caring for an older loved one is one of the most meaningful gifts you can give. But for many caregivers—particularly those caring for someone living with Alzheimer’s disease or another dementia related disorder —the emotional, physical, and mental demands can be overwhelming. It is easy to focus entirely on the person you love, but your own health and well-being are just as important. The truth is simple: when caregivers take care of themselves, they can provide better, safer, and more compassionate care for those who depend on them. We understand that caregiving for an older adult— especially one living with dementia — can feel like a full-time job. Our goal is to make sure caregivers never have to do it alone. Self care isn’t selfish – it is necessary. Our Caregiver Resource Center offers a range of supports and services designed to help you care for yourself while caring for others. CARING FOR THE CAREGIVER You don’t have to navigate caregiving alone. You are the foundation of the care— your health, strength, and wellness matter. Call Pathlights, (708) 361-0219, to learn more about the resources and support available to meet your unique needs.

For 50 years, we have guided individuals, caregivers, families and friends along the best path to aging – providing resources, advocacy programs and services needed to live with independence and dignity in the community.
